Sony VPL-VW85 review

There's no denying we like this Sony projector, but at nearly £5000 it loses out on that coveted fifth star

Immaculate finish ; easy to set-up ; superbly clean, clear and involving images

Expensive ; lacks subtlety of very best

This is a sublime projector, but in terms of performance per pound, it’s not quite five-star stuff

Sony VPL-VW85 review

Sony's SXRD projector sets a high standard

Excellent picture ; Flexible lens system ; Extensive user parameters

MotionFlow technology might not appeal to all

Absolutely superb performance makes this projector very difficult to beat, and at a reasonable price too

Sony - Bravia VPL-VW85

Home Cinema is a serious business thanks to the ever escalating march of technology and the rise of Blu-ray players and HD movies. With the opportunity to watch films in widescreen at near cinematic quality, aficionados ...

Yes it's a hefty price tag, but for the serious Home Cinema lover, Sony's answer to JVC's D-ILA range provides excellent sharpness and colour authentication with increased smoothness and easy remote controlling.

Sony VPL-VW85 SXRD Projector Review

Not long ago, projecting an image large enough to fill anything bigger than an 80" screen required purchasing a CRT (cathode ray tube) projector that weighed as much as a Smart Car and who only an investment banker could afford. Those CRT projectors...

Sony VPL-VW85

The Sony VPL-VW85 is a larger projector, it sports a motorize zoom lens, and lens shift. It's reasonably good looking, physically more attractive than most, but it's the performance that will have you putting a serious dent in that credit card

Excellent Color with particularly good skin tones (with a hint of too much red) ; Slightly above average brightness in "best" movie mode ; Superb black level performance ; Very good shadow detail performance ; If not using the dynamic iris, manual iris...

A relatively dim "brightest" mode, of 725 lumens means it can't deal with very much ambient light, at all ; Average sharpness (ok, that's more of a "typical" than a Con, but, sharpness is a big thing, for many, a key deciding factor ; Likely average to...

My last thoughts: Well, I'd rather have the VW85 over my RS20, if for no other reason, for the CFI for sports viewing. I'm even more intrigued, by JVC's DLA-RS35. The RS35 is essentially an VW85 with hand picked components and a higher level of quality...

Sony Bravia VPL-VW85

The VPL-VW85 is a high-end home theatre projector that boasts full 1080p resolution support. Is it a worthwhile investment?

Though expensive the Sony is a cost-effective way to create an impressive, large-screen experience.

Sony VPL-VW85 High-end SXRD Projector

The first thing that strikes me with the VW85 is the stylish chassis and finish. The unit looks and feels like a premium product with its sloped top plate and the midnight black colour with blue sparkling glitter finish. The lens is centrally mounted...

Sony BRAVIA VPL-VW85 SXRD Projector

The June 2009 issue of Home Theater featured a glowing report on Sony's VPL-VW70 video projector. But as they say, time flies when you're having fun. Building on its enviable past record in cutting-edge, high-value video projectors, Sony has just...
