HP's Elite X3 gets closer to the dream of a Windows Phone as a PC

It offers improvements to Windows 10's Continuum, but it has plenty of problems too.

HP Elite X3

HP is a name more associated with laptops than smartphones, but with the Elite X3 the brand is hoping to bring a little of its business nous to one of the most crowded and, arguably, tough to succeed in fields in tech.

HP Elite x3 review: Yep, this was the last great Windows phone

HP's Elite x3 combines amazing hardware, tremendous battery life, a stellar Continuum experience, and support for older Win32 apps. Whether that's enough to buoy Microsoft's vision remains to be seen.

Workspace virtualized apps are something special ; Desk Dock provides an excellent Continuum experience ; Two (not one!) ways to log in via Windows Hello

Extremely high price out of reach for most consumers ; Workspace interface could use some ease-of-use refinement ; Mediocre camera

Workspace makes your phone your PC—for real. Say what you will about Continuum, or how well HP has implemented it; you’re still at Microsoft’s mercy. And because Continuum only supports Microsoft’s relatively new UWP apps, there’s a vast body of apps...

HP Elite x3 review

A beautiful, capable phone limited by its OS

Massive battery ; Stunning design ; Can transform into a PC

Lousy app support ; Unwieldy size for some

HP’s Elite x3 is a well-built device and a solid performer all-around. Unfortunately, Windows 10 Mobile fails to back it with enough app support to make it suited for business users and consumers alike.

HP Elite x3

The HP Elite x3 is an unusual business-focused Windows phone that could really pay off for imaginative IT departments.

Big, clear screen. Easily IT managed. Integrates well with Microsoft Cloud and Salesforce. Turns into a desktop or laptop with Continuum.

Not as well supported by third parties as Android or iOS device. Continuum only works with a limited subset of apps. Main camera experienced focus problems in testing.

Comparisons and Conclusions The HP Elite x3 looks like a great solution for enterprises that want to consolidate their hardware layouts, are willing to buy into the full Microsoft stack (Office 365, Skype for Business, SharePoint, domains) and don't...

Can the transforming HP Elite X3 smartphone replace your desktop and laptop PCs?

We've seen devices of this ilk before, not least in the form of the Motorola Atrix 4G released a staggering five years ago, but HP believes it has overcome the barriers that have previously prevented all-in-one smartphone solutions from replacing all...

HP Elite x3 Phablet (incl. Lap Dock) Review

Business racer. HP is the only manufacturer offering a premium device with Windows 10 Mobile, which is mainly targeted towards business customers. Besides a large display, the customer also receives a strong battery, and a robust case, which can even...

fast SoC ; outstanding voice quality with ANC ; robust design ; large AMOLED display ; extendable storage ; USB 3.1 with DisplayPort/HDMI ; iris and fingerprint sensor ; strong business ambitions ; large battery

increased power consumption under load ; PWM flickering

The HP Elite x3 is a massive phablet, which HP advertises as a tablet not without reason. It combines a functional, robust design and functionality for a successful business tool. It targets the health sector, logistics, POS, the industry, and mainly...

HP Elite x3 review

Windows phones have had a hard ride. They aren't bad, it's just that Android and iOS is better. The high-end, high-spec HP Elite x3 is aimed squarely at business users but there are reasons to buy as an individual too. Here is our HP Elite x3 review..

The HP Elite x3 is an excellent smartphone, melding high-end specs with a solid design and good user experience. The Windows app store is still underrated, and the battery lasts for ages. However at £699 without the lapdock, this is not a cheap device.
