Origin EON17-SLX review

Powerful but impractical, the Origin EON17-SLX fits a niche.

The base price of the EON17-SLX is just north of $2,000, but our review unit arrived with a price tag of $3,900, which included a three-year warranty. Without that, you’re looking at about $3,600. Which is a lot. Yet the price doesn’t damage value as...

Origin EON17-SLX (2017)

The hefty Origin EON17-SLX delivers unparalleled performance for a gaming laptop thanks to SLI graphics and top-end features like a 4K G-Sync display. Just know you'll have to pay big for it.

Laptop-leading performance. Dual GTX 1080 graphics capable of 60fps 4K gaming. Unlocked desktop processor. Myriad port options. A ton of storage space.

Super expensive. Enormous size. 15 pounds with its two power bricks. Very short battery life.

There's no getting around the fact that the EON17-SLX is expensive, but if you're shopping in this price range, you're already prepared to spend big. For nearly $5,000, you're getting appropriate power for the price, with virtually unmatched...

Origin EON17-SLX review

This gaming laptop is a desktop PC in disguise

Nearly unrivaled performance ; Sharp, aggressive styling ; Big, bold sound

Awful battery life ; Astonishingly heavy

What's that, you wanted desktop power in a gaming laptop? Well, you finally have it with this 17-inch monster. But it comes at the cost of portability and a hefty chunk of your paycheck.

Origin EON17-SLX review: It sets new records, but calling it a laptop is a stretch

Seventeen inches wide. More than 10 pounds of heft. A socketed Core i7 Skylake CPU and a desktop GTX 980 card crammed inside. More graphics horsepower than any laptop we've ever tested. When does a laptop cease to be a laptop? Origin's EON17-SLX might...

Desktop CPU, desktop GPU, desktop performance ; Semi-upgradable, if you're interested

Massive ; Underwhelming screen, considering the price

Packing a socketed desktop Intel CPU and a full desktop GTX 980, Origin's EON17-SLX is barely a "laptop" at all.

Origin PC Eon17-SLX review: A gaming beast that's ready for VR

With a desktop processor and graphics card stuffed into a laptop body, this is one of the only laptops that can handle the Oculus Rift.

This is a laptop stuffed with desktop parts, including an overclocked processor and the type of desktop graphics card VR systems such as Oculus Rift require. It's highly configurable, and very powerful.

The generic body is clunky and ugly, especially considering the price. A VR-ready configuration costs a lot. The keyboard, touchpad and display are all merely OK.

The Origin PC Eon17-SLX is very expensive, and none too pretty, but also one of the only gaming laptops with the specialized components needed for VR hardware such as the Oculus Rift.

Origin PC Eon17-SLX 2016

Having desktop-level power in a laptop is something PC makers have been chasing for years. There was a time when serious PC gamers laughed at the poor schmoes playing on so-called "gaming laptops." These devices, no matter how heavy and bulky, just...

Origin EON17-SLX: High price and high performance

This dual-GPU gaming laptop from Origin PC is powerful, but not pretty.

The ; is a very powerful gaming laptop from a company with killer tech support. Highly flexible configuration options make it easy to build to your budget, and a Thunderbolt port adds a bit of future-proofing.

A top-of-the-line build is still prohibitively expensive, and even with a few new design tweaks, the chassis can't compare with custom designs from the major PC makers.

Cramming the most high-end parts into a massive 17-inch body will top $4,000, but you also get a powerful laptop that has more next-gen gaming muscle than any living-room console.

Origin EON17-SLX (2014)

The Origin EON17-SLX is a powerful gaming laptop, and while it's not perfect, the flaws are easily overlooked.

Powerful Intel Extreme Core i7-4930MX processor. Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M graphics. Spacious, speedy storage.

Odd touch pad design. Short battery life.

Conclusion While running down the list of components and specs would make the Origin EON17-SLX (2014) look like simply a refresh of last year's model, the new iteration gets more than a new coat of paint, thanks to an Intel Extreme Core i7 processor...

Origin EON17-SLX 2013

The first round consisted of smaller, more portable systems, such as the Origin PC EON13-S , Maingear Pulse 14 , and Alienware 14 . More recently, we've reviewed 17-inch and 18-inch models from Alienware, with the Alienware 18 as the new gold standard,...

Does Windows 8 help the Origin EON17-SLX gaming laptop?

Along with overclocked components, you can now add a new OS to this $4,500 game machine.

The insanely powerful ; can easily handle any PC game, and is configurable enough to fit many budgets. Service and support are stellar.

The generic-looking off-the-shelf body isn't becoming in a $4,000 laptop; Windows 8 feels odd without a touch screen.

No one puts together custom high-end gaming laptops, including this desktop-busting 17-inch EON17-SLX, better than Origin, but you'll pay for that expertise.
