Formerly known for the iconic, if boxy, ThinkPads (which the company still does well: see our review of the T400s ), Lenovo has also begun branching into more stylish consumer products, loosening up its slightly uptight design aesthetics along the way....

Great design; good speakers; generous selection of ports.

Weak graphics; no Bluetooth; thick chassis.

Reasonably priced, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 is a style-savvy, media-friendly laptop that unfortunately lacks gaming graphics.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y450's features and performance score will have you feeling good about the money you just saved.

Great price for the parts. HDMI and eSATA. Good performance. Lightweight compared with other 14-inch laptops. Decent battery life. Nice chassis design.

Almost too thick for its size. The interior of the laptop is a glare magnet.

When closed the Y450 feels pretty sturdy, but the screen lid shows signs of obvious flex under strong pressure. On closer inspection of the lid, the semi-gloss black surface has a honeycomb pattern for subtle styling, but it lacks the rubberized paint...

Noise levels were kept to a minimum when running on battery, but when the laptop was set to the "high performance" power profile under Microsoft Vista and was plugged into the AC adapter the fan becomes pretty noticeable. The fan noise was loud enough...

The new Lenovo Ideapad Y450 delivers very good multimedia experience. It also offers a truckload of features, besides performance.

Multimedia experience ; Proprietary software ; Keyboard, touchpad ; Feature set

No graphics card

Despite all that it's still a very good laptop. We were impressed by its multimedia potential and the range of proprietary software it offers. Also if feature set matters to you a lot, then the Ideapad Y450 is undoubtedly for you.
