Olympus Zuiko Digital 9-18mm 1:4-5.6 Lens Review

The Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm 1:4-5.6 is Olympus's latest all-new lens design, announced in May 2008. It sits in the company's 'Standard' series of lenses, and offers ultra-wide angle capability to the more budget-conscious user. In this regard it costs...

High image quality - decently sharp from centre to corner even wide open ; Extremely low distortion ; Essentially no falloff/vigmetting ; Small and lightweight

Moderate chromatic aberration (although not excessive for an ultra-wide)

The Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm 1:4-5.6 is without doubt a very good lens indeed, especially for a relatively inexpensive ultra-wideangle zoom. It's sharp even wide open, has negligible distortion, and shows practically no vignetting. Indeed it's a delight...

Olympus Zuiko Digital 9-18 mm f/4-5.6 ED

The Four Thirds system, like practically no other digital system on the market, is being built from scratch before our own eyes. That situation has disadvantages and advantages. An undeniable advantage is the fact, that all the new lenses are made...

Test Olympus Zuiko Digital 9-18 mm f/4-5.6 ED - Wstęp

Olympus Zuiko Digital 9-18 mm f/4-5.6 ED

Great light, relatively cheap ultrawide. It is very sharp and controls distortion well. If you want to try a wide angle lens, few are as competent and affordable.

Great focal range. Good control of distortion. Very sharp corner to corner. Very light, and takes filters. Good control of flare

Slow aperture, plasticky build

Very good lens with excellent price/value ratio.

Lightweight, sharp even wide open, very good against light source

Focus by wire. But according to DOF there is nearly no need to focus manually

Olympus Zuiko Digital 9-18 mm f/4-5.6 ED

Overall the 9-18mm is a winner for me. Its combination of compact size, low price, and good image quality make it an excellent choice for urban cityscape as well as nature landscape photogrpahy.

Excellent range of focal lengthsCompact designLightweightGood image qualityReasonable priceFunctions well with the Olympus E-P1 (w/adapter)Balances well with the entire Olympus/Panasonic range of cameras

Slightly slow (faster maximum aperture would be nice for street photography)Focusing could be faster (SWD would be cool)Concerns about long term durability in the field (probably not an issue, and heavier duty construction might add substantial weight)
