Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8D ED-IF II Nikkor

The lens above is shown in white, but mine, and every other unit I have seen, is in Nikon black. This is of course the non-VR model and though the VR is always a welcome addition, I believe this is one lens that when used for sports, wildlife, etc.,...

Optical Quality ; Build Quality ; AF speed is unreal ; Balance ; Speed ; Newest release has VR - makes it the only VR 300mm for Nikon bodies! and runs only $200ish more than the previous model

Lens hood - the spring loaded security screw broke about 3 months after I got it and the replacement is $300 ; Price - but worth it

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8D ED-IF VR Nikkor

This lens has phenomenal resolving power and contrast, even at f/2.8. When I got my first results back, I quickly understood this is one lens on which Nikon staked their reputation. Later, I used it with the Nikon TC 14E II converter - results...

Phenomenal resolution, contrast, even at f/2.8. Professional, tank like build quality.

"Gritty" looking bokeh.

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8D ED-IF VR Nikkor

Absolutely one of the best lenses made when it comes to sharpness, contrast, and focus speed. Build quality is superb. This len performs excellently at 2.8 and only improve a little when stopped down. It is completely uasable for stellar images...

Sharpness is legendary. Performance wideopen is great for sports. AF speed is super-fast. Build quality is great.

A bit heavy and a bit expensive...but, that's the price of fun!

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8D ED-IF VR Nikkor

Heck of a lens! If you are serious about your telephoto shots, you need this lens. I used the 300 2.8 AF-EDIF for a couple years. Its a great lens, but not the quality of this lens. Tack sharp, instant focus, snaps onto focus without focus hunting...

Fast, quiet focus. Superb build quality. Tack sharp images.

I would like a better hood mount, the clamp set up is lacking and clumsy. The bayonet mounting on the 'S' zooms is a much better setup.

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8D ED-IF VR Nikkor

WOW! If you want super fast focusing, Okay I will say it, TACK SHARP and extreme detail look no further. I had this on an F100, It is just incredible. A bit heavy, I lugged this thing around on a five mile trek, but the results were worth it. You have...

Sharp, Fast, built like a tank. Incredible detail and color

Lousy lense cover, giant sunshade, Heavy 5.5 pounds, Expensive, but you get what you pay for. If you can afford one, buy it, if you can't start saving, you won't be sorry you did.

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4.0D ED-IF Nikkor

Nikon introduced the AF-S 300/4 lens in 2001, thus replacing the glorious AF ED 300/4 IF. The new lens has some interesting features, which allow to consider it, at least in my opinion, as a real improvement on the previous model. Such features are: -...

Sharpness & contrast. Good quality with 1.4 X TCs.

Price, considering that the lens does not have VR feature.

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4.0D ED-IF Nikkor

This lens is super sharp and super fast focusing. The only lens in this range that I would consider optically better(for Nikon) is the 300mm 2.8AF-S. This being true, I believe with all my heart that the 300mm f/4 AF-S is a BETTER lens. Now before you...

Sharp, fast focus, light. relatively cheap

The resale value if and when nikon releases a VR model.

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4.0D ED-IF Nikkor

A fantastic lens. I have used it with a Tamron SP AF 1.4 converter and the Kenko autofocus extension tubes with great results. This lens focuses close by itself and with addition of either the 1.4 converter or the Kenko extension tubes,it makes a great...

Very sharp, fast & quiet autofocus, well built

As others have noted the tripod collar isn''t as smooth as on other Nikon lens but I can live it.

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4.0D ED-IF Nikkor

Steping up from 70 - 300 5.6 ED this lens is simply incomparable. Even when matched with TC 20 E converter it is still tack sharp. Had to purchase good solid tripod and supporting arm from Manfroto and my soft image problems were eliminated....

Sharp, fast focus and solid.

None

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4.0D ED-IF Nikkor

Like it''s predesessor, this lens is tack sharp even wide open and when used with a Nikon 1.4x contertor. Focus is very fast and precise, with or without 1.4x, on my f100. Much sharper with 1.4x than Tokina 400 f5.6 and it focuses faster. I have to...

Very sharp optics, well built. Unlike previous model 300 f4, Matrix metering and AF (still fast) is available with TC-14E (420mm f5.6).

The tripod collar is not as solid as I would like although, with proper technique (you need to rest you hand lightly on the top of the lens above the tripod collar - not out toward the focusing ring), it is certainly adequate. It also doesn''t rotate...
