This month we continue our odyssey amongst universal disc players and look at the other end of the market; the new Yamaha DVD-S657 and Pioneer's successor to the very popular DV-676, the DV-686. Both products reside in the "very affordable" category....

Attempts were made to obtain a third player, Samsung's latest HDMI equipped universal but the local importers proved to be less than enthusiastic to requests for a review sample

good value, video performance is quite good for the price, if not great. used as a CD player it's useable, giving rather mellow, non-forward sound. the older modell, the yamaha dvd-s557 is (sonically) far better, outperforming even 1000 $ CD standalone...
