Intel 750 Series 1.2TB NVMe PCIe SSD Review

Intel is still playing by the 2014 playbook, re-purposing datacenter technology to fit your desktop and budget. This time, the company is reaching for its top-shelf controller technology to guarantee a winner.

Performance, Price (400GB Model), Software Package, Reliability

Price (1.2 TB Model), Capacity Selection

It's the fastest client SSD every given to the public but you need the workload to take advantage of it. Under lighter workloads the SM951 offers nearly identical performance with more available user capacity (on the 400GB model). Professional users...

Intel SSD 750 Series 1.2TB PCIe NVMe Review

Ultra-fast sequential speeds, especially for reads.

Some other drives offer higher write performance in certain workloads.

A performance king for the consumer SSD market. If your workloads demand serious read performance, Intel’s NVMe-based SSD 750 Series drives are a strong choice.

Great Enterprise Grade SSD

I have become partial to Intel for my OS/boot drives on all of my server-grade builds. One of my previous bare-metal hypervisor builds has been running for 2.5 years, 24/7 with no issues. That performance made Intel an easy choice for my current NAS...

- Intel quality/design - Works well with server-grade OS - Typical SSD advantages when using as OS drive (booting, etc)

Good System Disk

George N.'s reviews cover this well, it makes a good system disk, ideally under-provisioned, which I do with disk partitioning. Works flawlessly with Supermicro X9SCM and X9SAE motherboards and Ubuntu 14.04 and FreeBSD 10 respectively. The former has...

Inexpensive, solid system disk, pairs well with cheaper, larger magnetic hard disks.

None given its positioning in the market.

Solid and reliable SSD

- The S3510 series SSD's are not for write intensive applications, nor are they top-tier performers, but they're a great fit for an OS disk. I'm using a mirrored pair of these as my OS disk under RHEL Workstation 7. - I've "short-stroked" these using...

- Excellent management tools & firmware utility - Works perfectly with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, plug-n-play - Consistent performance - Good price for an enterprise grade SSD

- Uses consumer grade NAND, not the 20 nm chips as used in higher end enterprise SSD's

Inexpensive, reasonable quality and performance, a great value SSD!

I'm using two of these in a mirrored pair for my OS disk. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2 Workstation. Straight out of the box, they needed a firmware update. The intel SSD Data Center Tool for Linux reported that a newer version was available, so I went...

Pros include 5 year warranty, enterprise firmware, metal casing construction, robust intel SSD "data center tool" software for performing firmware updates, LBA changes, etc. Plug-n-play with a SuperMIcro H8SCM board and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2.

Cons are that it uses cheesy 16 nm NAND like a consumer grade SSD, and has correspondingly low endurance. It's rated for just 0.3 DWPD, which is about on par with a "pro" level consumer SSD.

Fantastic SSD

I remember when the cost of solid state drives was > 1GB/$. This SSD is below that threshold and offers major performance gains. Although the price is steep when compared to conventional SSD, I frankly see it as a bargain.

Excellent transfer speeds, high IOPS, low latency ; I use this drive exclusively for gaming and it's glorious. The transition from an 840 Evo to this monster is the same as transitioning from a traditional mechanical hard drive to an SSD. I notice...

A bit a Frankenstein setup. I have a cable running from the M.2 in the middle of my motherboard over to the SSD, in addition to a SATA power cable. Doesn't make for the cleanest atheistic or easiest cable management. I have a cheap $30 case so this is...

Good Hard drive

Really easy to set up if you are using new equipment that is designed to use this new hard drive natively.

Really Fast

Price (but that will drop over time) ; Cable is too short for some cases

Fast

I upgraded my OS drive from a first generation OCZ Revo PCIe SSD to this Intel 750 Series. I have a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB for secondary game storage. The Intel drive meets my expectations because it is substantially faster than either the previous OCZ or...

Fast! (2GBps seq reads, 1GBps seq writes measured with AS SSD) ; High quality casing with heat sink ribbing ; Intel SSD Toolbox (utility) ; Fast

SFF-8643 Connector required ASUS Model Hyper Kit Expansion Card for my ASUS Deluxe X99 mobo ; Intel doesn't provide Win 8.1 compatible disk migration utility (used Macrium to clone)
