Monitor Audio i-Deck review: Monitor Audio i-Deck

Monitor Audio i-Deck

Attractive design; decent sound quality; separable speakers; line-in/line-out; ability to recharge iPod; built-in USB port for PC connectivity; decent bass for a system without a subwoofer.

Can't control volume without remote; remote control offers only rudimentary navigation; somewhat pricey.

Though it's fairly pricey, the Monitor Audio i-Deck is one of the best-sounding and most attractive stereo speaker systems for the iPod.

Monitor Audio I-Deck

The British company Monitor Audio, known for its excellent high-end loudspeakers since the early 1970s, has developed a bookshelf-size digital music system specifically for the Apple iPod. The Monitor Audio i-Deck ($349 direct) is not a portable...

Distortion is low even at maximum volume. Striking slanted design. Easy to set up and use

Parts of the treble range sound distant. No tone controls

For the money, this iPod speaker/dock provides very good sound quality and enough power for everyday use.

Monitor Audio i-Deck

Recent price drops have meant the Monitor Audio i-Deck is one of the best-sounding and most attractive iPod speaker systems for the money.

Attractive design ; Excellent sound quality, with decent bass for a system without a subwoofer ; Separate speakers ; Line-in/line-out ; Ability to recharge iPod and built-in USB port for PC connectivity

Can't control volume without remote ; Remote control offers only rudimentary navigation

A quick comparison between the i-Deck and the Altec Lansing InMotion iM7 revealed the i-Deck to be the better-sounding system; however, the iM7 offers more versatility because it can run on batteries and be toted around like a boom box. The trade-off...

In order to have the ipod repond adequately - handle it with kid gloves

Monitor Audio i-deck

British thoroughbred Monitor Audio, as you probably know, has an excellent reputation in home audio. The i-deck hopes to continue that tradition and, having been around for a while now, has just received a price cut to a wallet-friendly ?200.

Good value, warm bass

Clunky design

"High-end" iPod audio system provides exceptional sound quality at a very reasonable price.

Despite its lack of low-end extension, the i-deck is one of the most balanced and natural-sounding iPod speaker systems I've heard. For $249, you simply won't find another iPod-specific speaker system that sounds this good. And depending on your...

Excellent sound quality, especially treble detail, midrange, and stereo imaging ; inexpensive compared to other "best" iPod speakers ; dock charges iPod and can sync with computer ; RF-based remote has good range, even through walls

Gray/white version looks a bit plasticky ; remote buttons difficult to press ; lacks low-end bass extension

Using the included 5-foot mini-to-mini cable (or any similar cable) you can connect an audio source other than an iPod (as well as 1st- and 2nd-generation iPods or an iPod shuffle) to the i-deck's stereo input jack to listen to it through the i-deck....

Monitor Audio i-deck

Shortly after Steve Jobs became a music mogul, the iPod became something of a home audio server. This brilliant left turn has made everyone's favorite white object of desire a doubly useful device that entertains whether you're at home or on the go....

Altogether, the i-deck is an excellent way to keep your iPod going at home. It won't play extremely loud, process signals in surround, or fling music throughout the home in a multizone system. But it will continue a musical conversation begun during...

Another expensive iPod accessory, but does it justify the price?

Monitor Audio - i-deck

Oh woe is you. You have such great tunes and playlists on your iPod MP3 player, but you can't share your sounds with other people in a group-listening session. Well, there are actually plenty of ways ...

250 is a lot of money to spend on an iPod accessory, especially when a basic audio-out cable will deliver music through the auxiliary input of your main stereo system (provided, of course, that you have a system with aux inputs). The good news is that...
