HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition review: HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition

HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition

Still has our favorite Netbook keyboard; sleek Mi interface makes for an intuitive and easy user experience.

Linux-based custom interface will appeal to a limited audience; won't work with most of your existing software.

HP has added a Linux-based OS to its popular Mini 1000 Netbook's Mi edition, dressed up with a glossy, sexy front-end, but many users will still want the flexibility and familiarity of Windows.

HP Mini 1000 Mi

The HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition is impressive inside and out, and a beautifully designed custom Ubuntu build is icing on the cake.

Custom Ubuntu build is intuitive and efficient. Stylish design. Gorgeous glass screen. Lightweight. Speedy enough performance with Atom processor.

Mouse buttons are still awkwardly placed.

Our unit also was loaded with the same 60GB, 4,200-rpm drive we complained about in our review of the Mini 1000 unit. Other options include 8GB (for $55 less than the 60GB) and 16GB (for $30 less) SSDs. The original review talked about sluggish...

Mini 1000 MI

Don't blink. Somewhere among the launches of the HP Mini 1000, the business-based Mini 2140, and the ridiculous, high-fashion Mini 1000 Vivian Tam Edition, HP released the Mini 1000 Mi. The difference this time around: the operating system. HP ships...

Great keyboard Surprisingly good speakers

Horrible trackpad button placement Linux interface learning curve

The only real downer is the price of the Mi edition. You see, while HP says that these machines start at $400, our configuration costs $460. You'd figure that with Linux, we'd get a bit more of a price break on this netbook

Review: HP Mini 1000

HP's newest netbook, the Mini 1000, is lighter, svelter, stronger, better tasting, and yes, even cheaper than its predecessor. HP Mini 1000 7/10 Learn How...

Reasonably snappy performance on par with other Atom-based netbooks. SSD model includes a built-in thumb drive and extra, recessed USB port. Includes upscale laptop features, such as a docking port and an on/off switch for the trackpad. Gorgeous,...

Extra doesn’t sound like much, but it’s 17 percent more expensive than the Lenovo S10. Prone to tipping backwards when opened. Mouse button placement is love-it or hate-it relationship

Battery test results updated 10/31, 11:50 am PDT

Fantastic Keyboard Surprisingly good sound

Glossy Screen is hard-to-see in daylight Side-mounted mouse buttons

With the Mini 1000, HP does a good job keeping most of the things that worked on the 2133, while upping the performance and managing to cut prices in the process--well, not counting the fashionista-flavored model. Is a Mini 1000 right for you? If...

HP Mini 1000

The Mini 1000, HP's new netbook, is by far the prettiest. But how do the other parts stand up?

Runs on the Intel Atom platform. Gorgeous, big (10-inch) glass screen. Best-looking design. Lighter than its rivals. WWAN, bigger battery, and excellent Ubuntu distro options later this year. Superior keyboard.

Mouse buttons are awkwardly placed. Slow-spinning hard drives. VGA-out requires a dongle.

HP Mini 1001TU

A good looking netbook that doesn't have enough to justify its price.

1.1kg, relatively easy to type on, looks good, plenty of storage capacity

Short battery life, shared microphone and headphone port, only two USB 2.0 ports, no 802.11n wireless networking, no D-Sub port

Our overall opinion of the HP Mini 1001TU is that while it looks good, it's underdone. It needs a better battery, one more USB 2.0 port, a D-Sub port, and faster wireless networking — at least — considering its high price.

HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition User Review

Last year's HP Mini-note 2133 looked great, but it was let down by a pokey slow VIA C-7 CPU and 4200rpm HDD. I can imagine many people who got to handle a 2133 trying to rationalize how they probably didn't need too much CPU power because of how...

Cool operating system: Ubuntu + Mi = Win ; Nice form factor - thin and stylish ; Great keyboard and touch pad ; Despite having some gaps, the Mi concept has some serious potential

Without integrated "cloud" storage services the 8GB SSD is insufficient ; HP MediaStyle applications are of limited value ; Price still needs to come down a bit - there are better values on the market from HP's rivals ; Memory compartment door pops off...

HP's Mini Mi has been an eye-opener for me. This isn't because the Mini Mi is a perfect product, clearly it's not. The lesson I am taking away from this review is how friendly/easy/awesome Linux and specifically Ubuntu can be when a PC maker puts some...

HP Mini 1000 Review

The HP Mini 1000 looks just like a condensed Pavilion notebook, with a sleek and smooth body, glossy Imprint Finish, and color coordinated design. Compared to the older Mini-Note 2133 HP took extra steps to reduce the thickness of the body; removing...

Best netbook keyboard ; Upgrade-friendly spring-loaded RAM slot ; Good looking design with excellent build quality ; Very good speakers for a netbook

Highly reflective screen if you have the Infinity 10.2” panel ; Proprietary adapter needed for VGA out ; No clear option for an extended battery

With the screen brightness set to about 60 percent and wireless active the HP Mini 1000 managed 2 hours and 55 minutes of battery life before it had to go into sleep mode. This is a big step up when you look at the Mini-Note 2133 which only managed 2...
