Amazon Echo Show review: Alexa steps into a touchscreen future

The Echo Show is really the pinnacle of the Echo experience: once you've seen it, you won't want to do back to just having a speaker. Alexa calling is

Responsive touchscreen ; Bright display ; Louder and better speakers than Echo ; Fully-fledged Alexa experience ; Video calls and Drop In mode

Low resolution ; Not a truly high-end speaker ; No app store or deep interface ; Few touch-enabled skills

Amazon has turned its Alexa voice-control assistant into a wider platform. And the Echo Show, which is essentially an Echo with a touchscreen, expands what you can do with Alexa and how useful the service is.

Amazon Echo Show review

The Amazon Echo Show adds sight to the sound

Awesome voice recognition ; Visually rich touchscreen ; Competent smart home hub

Speaker still sounds shallow ; Video calling is limited ; Alexa needs some schooling

The Echo Show, like the Echo before it, is more of a fun, ancillary device than it is a true necessity. It adds value by combining devices you already have and ones you could buy at a lower price elsewhere – just look at the Amazon Echo Dot, for...

Amazon Echo Show

Amazon Echo Show review: adding a screen definitely improves the Alexa AI experience, although the smaller and cheaper Echo Spot is easier to accommodate.

Useful screen ; Video calling works well ; More intuitive than other Echo devices ; Best-sounding Echo so far

Expensive ; Not the best-looking thing

In many ways, the best Amazon Echo experience.

Amazon Echo Show review: The Echo with visual va va voom is only £130

Amazon's uglified Echo Show is actually rather good – and it's only £130

Video calling works well ; Easier to get to grips with than other Echo speakers ; Good sound quality

Pricey ; Not the most attractive thing

Remember: the Echo Show does all the stuff a regular Echo can do but its touchscreen adds just enough visual flair and extra information to make the whole experience that bit more accessible and pleasurable. It’s Amazon’s best-sounding and most...

Amazon Echo Show review

The display provides an entirely new way to interact with Alexa, but is the Echo Show worth £199? Here's our Amazon Echo Show review.

Amazon Echo Show review

Alexa takes on a new, but not fully convincing, form

Effective smart home hub ; Alexa is still a helpful ally ; There's potential to tap

Needs a lot more visual apps ; Underwhelming speakers ; Clunky design

The Echo Show has potential, but it's mostly unrealised so far

Amazon Echo Show review

Editor's note (October 26, 2017): Since introducing the Show in June 2017, Amazon has evolved its lineup of Echo smart speakers , refreshing some older models and continuing to expand Alexa's skills, support new third-party integrations and release...

The Echo Show offers everything you love about Alexa, complete with new video and touchscreen controls. It shines best as a dedicated, hands-free video calling command center.

The uninspired design feels dated. At launch, the touchscreen visuals don't do enough to bring Alexa to life, or make her much easier to use -- though that could change with the arrival of new screen-specific Alexa skills.

Amazon's touchscreen Alexa device shows potential for people interested in video chatting with friends and family members, but it needs a little more development before we'd recommend it.

Amazon Echo Show review: This is the best Echo (but it’s also the most expensive)

Amazon's best smart speaker, the Echo Show comes with a 7-inch touchscreen.

Everything we like about Alexa, plus visual feedback ; A 7-inch touchscreen display ; Video calls and an in-home video intercom (two Echo Shows required)

Can't stream media from network storage ; No video our aux audio output ; Smallish 7-inch display that's limited to 1024x600 resolution

Priced at $229.99, the Echo Show isn’t exactly cheap. But it delivers plenty of value, and at press time, Amazon was offering a $100 discount to shoppers who buy two at once. This is the first time Amazon has offered a lower price on the Show, however,...

Amazon Echo Show

The Amazon Echo Show pairs a camera and 7-inch touch screen with the Alexa voice assistant, but the combination doesn't feel particularly necessary. The Echo remains a better overall value.

Touch screen useful for discovery, selecting suggested items, and controlling playback. Full range of Alexa features with visuals.

Limited touch control options. Drop In voice and video messaging only works with other Alexa users. Dated design. Unimpressive audio quality for the price.

That said, the Echo Show is a handy little gadget you can put on your kitchen counter or bookshelf to get quick access to a lot of information using only your voice. And Amazon occasionally has sales on its devices—if you find it for around $200 on...
