Leica Digilux 2 review

Leica Digilux 2 Remember these relics: shutter-speed dials; metering-mode switches; and mechanical rings for aperture, zoom, and focus control? Stone Age technology, sure, but here's an amusing factoid: they work a whole lot better than the motorized,...

Beautiful mechanical focus, zoom, aperture, and shutter-speed controls; high-quality magnesium body; fast lens with sensible zoom range; ingenious tiltable flash; excellent manual focus system.

Relatively low resolution for an enthusiast model; big and heavy; long raw-format shot-to-shot time; electronic viewfinder isn't the best available; high-res continuous shooting limited to three frames.

This well-made advanced shooter's camera features several unique and very efficient analog controls, but it may have trouble luring buyers away from cheaper digital SLR systems.

Leica Digilux 2

The Leica Digilux 2's image quality is superb, recycle time is good, focus and zoom are fast, selecting settings on the fly is a breeze, and the built-in bounce flash is a wonderful bonus.

Sure, $1,850 is a little rich for most buyers. But those who appreciate the finest—and don't mind paying for it—will understand.

On 1st December 2003 Leica announced the all new Digilux2 digital camera. The five megapixel Digilux 2 has a unique 'retro' designand style with an all metal case and rubber coating which look more likean analogue film camera of the 1970's. The quality...

Good resolution, clean images with few processing artifacts ; Contrasty tone balance (black is almost always black) ; Natural yet appealing color balance ; Noise reduction works fairly well at higher ISO's although should be user controllable ; Superb...

Poor macro performance ; No ISO 50, could have delivered silky smooth images with this option ; EVF leaves a lot to be desired, purists will expect a quality finder ; Camera locked while writing RAW images ; Poor supplied RAW conversion software ;...

When you first handle the Digilux 2 you can't help but be impressed by its build quality and logical control layout. I'm quite comfortable stating that the Digilux 2 has the easiest to use manual controls of any current digital camera. This allows for...

Its fluid operation and precise controls may be enough to lure enthusiasts away from a dSLR.
